Miami Beat, shameless self promotion

ImageFor you regular readers of this blog I wanted to inform you that my short novel, Miami Beat is our on Amazon as a Kindle book and on Barnes and Noble as a Nook book. Paperback copies will be available at Amazon in about three weeks. They are also available at my place of business, Car Clinic in Lake Worth.

It is the ficional story of a classic car restorer in Miami who does investigative work on the side. There is a who-dunnit, interesting characters, some humor and an insiders view of South Florida.

Restaurant review: La Cigale, Delray Beach,Florida

Those of you who read this blog regularly know the wife and I eat out at least twice a week. When I do write a review it is usually due to a great meal and service or the opposite.

For me to get home after I have just left a restaurant to write a review is unusual.

La Cigale is extraordinary. There are items on this menu that I have only seen in restaurants in New York, London or Paris.

I am inured and cynical about restaurants that pass themselves as gourmet. This place does not do that but it should.

To see pate’, fois gras, escargot and Cioppino on the same menu is very rare for South Florida.

My wife and friend Arthur had grilled scallops with truffle oil with a bed of grilled spinach with porcini mushroom risotto. I did manage to steal a bite of their dish, it was to die for.

I had a pate’ appetizer that was as smooth as ice cream in texture and did not have the sandy and gritty taste that you usually get in want to be gourmet restaurants.

My main dish was Cioppino which was perfect in taste ( sauce not too overpowering) and texture ( seafood was not overcooked)

The wine selection was extraordinary and I ordered my wife a Santa Margharita Pinot Grigio that was delightful and I had a California Merlot that was as smooth as Frank Sinatra’s voice.

The staff starting with the bartender Debra, the hostess Mary, the server John were as professional and as attentive as you would want without being overbearing.

Service was impeccable and you regular readers know how much I appreciate linen napkins.

The icing on the cake if you will is my private pet peeve about restaurants. 98% of the restaurants when you are finished with your appetizer they put your used utensils back on the table for the main entrée. As most real classy restaurants do they take away the used fork and knife and give you a new set. Of course they did this right at La Cigale.

I always put my knife and fork on the empty appetizer plate and wait to see if they take those away with the used plate or they place it back on the table for re-use. They of course took them and gave me new ones without having to ask for them, trust me that is a rarity.

The drinks and wine servings were generous. And the owners came by the table to ask how everything was. Without asking there were a lime tart and a chocolate cake cupcake with cream that were placed on the table for our enjoyment.

What a Country! GOP help women?

I just finished reading a humor filled column by Noelle Ninkompoop of Fox News. I did not know she was also a comedy writer.

The headline in a national  newspaper screamed: GOP WORKING TO EMPOWER WOMEN. Naturally this caught my eye because the GOP has done completely the opposite in recent memory. I thought maybe they had a heart transplant at GOP headquarters or that they came to their senses and realized that without the woman’s vote they will lose the November Presidential elections faster than a hooker loses her panties at a Shriner’s convention.

So the further I read the article I realized that the headline should have read: GOP WORKING TO EMPOWER CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN WOMEN IN CONGRESS.

It’s all about how there are PAC’s in Washington created to help the women mentioned above. Such hypocrisy in this party. They are not helping working women, working moms, or the disenfranchised but the elite women politicians of their party. Nothing wrong with that but do not put such a headline like hers on a national paper, put one like mine at least it tells the truth.

And Nicole Nitwit has the fucking gall to write: ” The Republican Party realizes it has a gender gap with women voters and is eager to find strong candidates.” Really? You think there’s a gap? Is there a gap in the Grand Canyon? Yes Einstein there is a huge gap. But hey, you have you have seven months to fix this before elections. You can fix years of Republicans treating women like second class citizens in that time, ha, ha ha.

And she goes on to further write: This is really going to confuse the media.By default, a “woman’s issue” is a liberal one. Hey genius girl, no one is confused because you are not helping all women, you are helping your own.

They still don’t get it do they?  Just because there are 29 women ( five in the Senate, twenty-four in the House)  who are Republican conservative politicians and the GOP is creating PAC’s to help them does not mean they are helping all women across America.

Of course the fact that they are helping any women is probably what is making their pants wet.

What a Country! Secret Service Sex

You would think that by all the hue and cry coming from all corners that the U.S. Secret Service raped, pillaged, plundered, sodomized and ripped the tags off their mattresses to break laws down there in Columbia.

Now boys will be boys as the testosterone flies but this is not Tailhook or sexual harrasment.One day before they were to be briefed and two days before President Hipster was to arrive in Columbia the SS boys and some military personnel decided to have some fun and blow off some steam by consorting with prostitutes which is a LEGAL profession in Columbia by the way for you Pollyannas out there.

Unless someone comes up with a plot out of an Austin Powers movie where the SS agents were going to have their brains transplanted with a mind control chip or they had perfect body doubles of them with killer robot brains to take the Presidents life, everyone just calm down and stop getting your panties in a wringer.

The boys did not break any laws, did not harm anyone and other than one of them who obviously was the stupid one and decided not to pay for his hooker so she started wailing like a whore in church singing Amazing Grace, and the cat was out of the proverbial bag.

The feces hit the fan and the media mongers started chumming the waters with “investigations”. Now we have SS director Mark Sullivan and Senator Susan Collins of Maine, the senior Republican on the Homeland Security committee looking into an investigation.

So some of the boys will take early retirement, some will transfer, some will be deployed elsewhere, the investigators will beat their chest that they cleaned up the service and boys will continue to be boys.

In case you think I am being lenient on the boys, I hope they were single because if they were married then they deserve to spend eternity in a shopping mall carrying the little woman’s purse while they make sure the mother in law has all her necessities met.

What a Country! The Buffett Rule

I was saddened to read that the “Buffett Rule” did not pass thru the Senate. I was not surprised however based on how many millionaires are part of that club. More on the pigs feeding at the trough later.

The Buffett Rule is named after  billionaire Warren Buffett who gladly told anyone within earshot that his secretary pays a higher percentage of taxes than he does. So President Obama and some Democrats and independents has an honorable idea of trying to pass legislation to have anyone making over a million dollars have to pay a higher percentage of taxes than they do know.

Say Mitt Romney for example whose wealth is estimated to be $190 million to $250 million and is currently paying about 14% tax rate would now be paying at 30%. Now if I was in Mitt’s shoes I would also be fighting against paying 16% MORE in taxes but the problem is I am not Mitt and neither is 99% of America.

Now back to the pigs at the trough. The latest figures are from 2009 but here is an interesting set of percentages that are about politicians that are in Washington D.C. to allegedly represent YOU.

In 2009 out of 535 members of Congress, 261 have an estimated wealth of at least ONE MILLION DOLLARS, that is almost half. Out of those 261, 55 of them have an estimated wealth of at least TEN MILLION DOLLARS.

The average median wealth in the House is $765,000 dollars. In the Senate its $2.38 MILLION DOLLARS.That is average income and that is in 2009 dollars. Wonder what it is in 2012?

Out of the 244 confirmed millionaires in 2009, 138 were Republicans and 106 were Democrats so it is fairly even.

So asking either the House or Senate to vote for a tax increase on basically themselves is like asking Hannibal Lechter if wants to vote for a Vegan or Meat diet in his jail mess hall. Not going to happen.

So it was a nice gesture by the Hipster and a billionaire to try to pass this placebo pablum for the masses but the millionaires in both houses will never pass it and the millionaires in Wall Street and in board rooms everywhere will fight it no matter what. So unless the 99% and the Occupy( fill in your ax to grind here) whatever have a complete occupation of power in the country, the rich will get richer and the poor will get the short end of a very thin stick.

What a Country! The GOP frontrunner

Well folks it looks like Mitt “stiff as a board” Romney is halfway to the GOP nomination, Rick “no sodomy allowed ” Santorum is not going to get his wish of a contested convention after losing  the primaries in Wisconsin, Maryland and D.C. this week.

The rank and file and some high-profile (Marco Rubio) pols are starting to line up and are endorsing Mitt as the front-runner to make the Rep/Obs look like they have a united front.

The problem is that the teabaggers and the ultra conservatives are still looking at Mitt with a jaundiced eye because he is not conservative enough for their backward, Neanderthal 1950’s mindset.

Unless the entire GOP party unites the chance of Mitt winning the presidential office from the “Hipster” are slim and none and none has left the building.

The GOP is having problems attracting women, Hispanics and minorities into the party, I wonder why? Maybe it’s because the party wants to tell women what to do with their bodies?

Maybe it’s because they are so out of touch with the plight of minorities?

Maybe it’s because of their stance on immigration? 

Maybe it’s because the GOP is so out of touch with reality?

Maybe it’s because of how they view the gay community? Of course except the ones in their own party that are closet gays themselves.

Maybe it’s because spokesmen, Senators and Congressmen from the GOP are a lily-white, rich, stiff, corporate lap dogs say like Eric Cantor or  Rand Paul.

Someone at the GOP has to think that minorities, women and the disenfranchised should have some representation from their party but noooooooooooooooooo, they are just too caught up in the lobbyists and corporate pockets  to give a rat’s ass.

Not that the Dems are totally faultless here, but at least they appear to give a damn about the poor and those lacking in health care. It gives the folks some hope at least.

I predict that the Hipster will carry the votes with women and minorities, that could be enough to carry him over the top.

What a Country! Rush Limbaugh is out of control

At last count nine companies have dropped their sponsorships of Rush’s radio show. One radio station has dropped his show due to the “slut” comment aimed at student Sandra Fluke last week on his oh so popular radio show.

It could not happen to a nicer guy. What a mean-spirited this bloated little man is. And anyone should be talking about taking pills but him.

And contraception? He has been married four times and no kids…………hmmmmmmmmmmmm?  Maybe he doesn’t need it or the ovarian eggs recoil at the sight of his sperm, no doubt the gag meter is off the charts on those little swimmers.

This guy is the Pope of the Republican party, which goes to show how far down in the gutter they have gone. Wasnt he going to move to Canada if Hillary ran for President back in 2008? Let’s start a collection to buy him an Air Canada ticket  eh?

And while we are it how about your Armed Forces history?  You didnt weasel out and get a deferment did you  Captain America?

One of the great things about this country is that everyone is entitled to their opinion but when you make it personal and you insult someone you do not know and you are mean-spirited about it  you have to live with the backlash and then you open yourself to others opinions and ridicule. I don’t like him obviously and I held back on giving him any attention but this time he went too far.

This guy is a blowhard,has no expertise in politics and used to be the puppet for the Republican inner circle of obstructionists and political consultant ghouls but now he is the one holding the strings. I will not buy anything from any company that has ads on his show and I will not advertize my business on Clear Channel.

The bloated fuck deserves to be bitch slapped.

What a Country! Prayer in Florida schools?

Well the Republican led Legislature in Florida, led by a Republican Governor who spout, “We are for smaller government” like zombies on Xanax and swear at every town hall  that they are for less government intrusion are considering bringing back prayer in school.

Mind you this is 2012 so every special interest group, every obscure religion and every weirdo religion will have to be included so no one gets their panties in the wringer. So the ACLU will come out to defend Nazi’s for Jesus, Jews for Jehovah, Devil Worshipers from Mars, Siamese Twins for Satan, Baptists for Beelzebub , Toe worshipers from Tampa, Pee Wee’s Perverts and every obscure religious group in the state because that is the times we live in, everyone is afraid of upsetting or offending any one so there wont be any lawsuit, that is what the bare bones ideology is folks.

So that the school boards in every county don’t get their pants sued, the Florida Legislature wants to bring back what the morons in the Legislature call “inspirational messages”. And the students can include anything they want in these messages because of our “constitutional freedom of speech”.

So Billy Bob from Polk County can say anything of a racist nature and he will be protected. Ashley from Duval County can talk about her mental affair with Satan.The ACLU is getting their lawyers ready in case anyone’s rights get offended. The Anti-Defamation League is getting ready in case anyone gets offended due to an insult to their ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability. Rabbi’s are rabid. Muslims are on edge.

So in other words the lawyers and politicians have managed to circle jerk this situation into a legal cluster fuck.Lawyers on retainer, judges on standby,constitutional protectors armed with torts and depositions.

Hey, morons in Tallahassee how about some COMMON SENSE? Pass a law that there is a moment of silence for one minute , that way everyone can pray to the deity of their choice,no one gets offended, the lawyers can go back to bottom feeding and the politicians can try to do something constructive for a change. But hey, its common sense something sorely lacking in Florida’s Legislature.

So instead of tackling real issues like unemployment, homeless, drug houses, foreclosures, the economy, pill mills, drug abuse, child endangerment, pedophiles, sexual  predators the Florida Legislature is wasting their time on this bullshit.

And we elected these morons.

What a Country ! Religious Zombies

I really admire the Conservative Christians, the Religious Right, the Holy Rollers for their conviction and the faith in their faith and unwavering support of the causes that they believe in.

What I have a HUGE problem with is that they want the rest of the country to fall in jack boot step with them to wait for the rapture and if you do not believe in their conservative views you are a heathen, a devil, or even worse a moderate!

They want everyone to agree with their abortion  beliefs, their contraception policies and their version of what is right and what is wrong. And here is why they are so reviled by the rest of the country, if YOU do not believe in their dogma, all of it, YOU are going to hell, YOU are bad for this country, YOU are  incapable of being elected.

Unfortunately it appears that most of these people are Republicans that want to live  in the U.S.A of the 1950’s where there were no gay people, no racial equality,  working women were treated like slaves and white bread automatons ruled the country.

Ozzie and Harriet were on T.V. as a perfect couple. They did not tell you the ol’ girl was on megadoses of Thorazine and ol’ Oz was whacking to pictures of Betty Page. Lucy and Ricky were on, obviously not as  perfect a couple with Lucy vying for more attention than a nymphomaniac on speed at a Hell’s Angels convention and Ricky nailing everything with a skirt that was semi breathing.

Those days are over folks, get over it! The innocence of that era has long been washed away by the Kennedy assassinations, Vietnam, Kent State, the My Lai massacres, Watergate, the civil rights abuses, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Charles Manson, 9/11, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Ollie North,The Iraq War #2,Timothy Mc Veigh,Katrina, Wall Street, the steroid era in baseball,Bernie Madoff…………..the list is endless I could go on for a long time. The cynicism that has crept into the national psyche is irreversible.

No wonder people want to go back to a simpler and more innocent time.

Back to the start, it is ok to believe in what you believe in but the rest of the country does not have to if they do not want to.

What a country! Lowlifes in the Florida Legislature

Residents of Florida beware, the Legislature is trying to pass a bill that shields current members, past members , current and past staff from being sued and from requesting depositions from any lawsuits whatsoever.

The timing is interesting because the Dems are getting ready to sue in light  of the “smoky back room deals” that were done in the current redistricting efforts which were not so curiously set up to favor the Republican/Obstructionist party.

Now I am a big boy and I know how it works, and this redistricting favoritism is normal course of business for the party in power to favor themselves  but to hide behind a law that protects them from ANY lawsuits is giving the crooks and thieves carte blanche to screw over the populace and have no recourse or responsibility for their actions.

House Speaker Dean Cannon had the big cojones to stand in front of reporters with a straight face and say: ” this will put us in sync with other states that shield lawmakers and uphold the truth that the motives, or opinions or attitudes of an individual legislator ………aren’t appropriate for discovery”. The blatant nerve !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What this is saying without the lawyerese is: whatever the legislator does is none of your business and any suit seeking a deposition will not be allowed under the proposed bill and therefore there cannot be any legal recourse,screw you.

We keep electing these morons,  we have no one to blame but ourselves.
