In November 2010 voters in Florida overwhelmingly passed Amendments 5 and 6 which were meant to create fair voting districts. This vote was 63% for versus 37 against.
The Republican controlled legislature is dragging their feet, stonewalling the process and have gone as far as having the State House join a lawsuit by U.S.Reprentatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Corrine Brown to overturn Amendment 6 from the Florida Constitution. Ironically named as the defendant in the suit is Florida’s Secretary of State, one Kurt Browning who before he was appointed to that job headed up the “Nix 5 and 6″ campaign during the 2010 elections. Ironic isn’t it?
Why you ask? Well its easy to see that when redistricting is done by the people ,a lot of the current office holders either will not have a district to run in that is like today’s, or they might actually have some competition.
So they are saving their current jobs and dragging it on as long as possible before the people reconfigure the districts.
Keep in mind that the Florida Legislature used OUR TAX DOLLARS to the tune of one million dollars from 2008 to 2010 to fight getting these amendments on the ballot. In plain terms they are using our money to protect their seats and at the same time ignoring the will of the people, yet there is no hue and cry about this.
Now comes U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz to shed some light and hold the Florida House responsible for the slow pace of this imbroglio. Good for her! She correctly mentioned that by the slow deliberations of the Republican controlled House there is a real danger that the 2012 elections will be run in the old districts who number one: reflect census reports of 2000 and number two: favor the current Republican darlings of the State of Florida. No wonder they are dragging their feet.
As incredible as it sounds, State Senator Don Gaetz R-Niceville had the balls, bravado, and bald-faced bullshit to say:” There is no foundation to what she said”. Hey Don, your own party and two of your state colleagues have filed a lawsuit to overturn that amendment, wake up and get with the program, your party is trying to stop or slow the redistricting so you do not lose your precious seats. And this Nimrod could be the next Florida Senate president if the Republicans maintain their majority after the 2012 elections.
Redistricting is a very important tool in the political game, he who controls the districts can control the state houses. What is it going to take to get the people of Florida to stop putting up with this bullshit?
